Day 5 Pamplona to Zariquiegui

It was raining this morning and this second day in Pamplona had been the day I had previously taken as a rest day. Instead of a rest day this time I had decided to head up to Zariquiegui – yes you should try to say it out loud. Remember the Z sounds like TH in English. Damned if I could get it right!

Janine was also keen to partake in the dawn visit to alto del perdon the next day so we decided to walk half way to Zariquiegui later in the morning and stay at the little albergue there.

But first we headed out for breakfast with Michelle and all went up to Cafe Irún where Ernest Hemingway used to hang out.

We farewelled Michelle after breakfast and stayed for a while admiring the elaborate interior and resting in the shelter from the rain. It wasn’t a fantastic meal but it was a great place to sit for a while until it started getting crowded with locals. At this point we headed toward the local department store and bought the SIM cards before transporting ourselves to the start of the trail up to Zariquiegui.

It was actually a bit of a slog but nothing like going up the Pyrenees and we eventually found ourselves planted in a four bed bunk room with a Cornish man and and an American who were clearly capable of covering much greater distances than us having come from Larrasoaña in one day.

Anyway we had a very big salad and chicken for a pilgrims meal and went to sleep early in readiness for an early start to climb the hill and catch the sunrise.

Buenas noches!
